And The Winner Is ... Whoopi

Billy Crystal out, Whoopi Goldberg in. Whoopi was named Tuesday to host the 71st annual Academy Awards ceremony, to be held Sunday, March 21. It will be her third time at the helm of the event. “I am thrilled to escort Oscar into the new millennium,” she said in a statement. “Who would have thought I would be hosting the last Oscar telecast of the century?” Goldberg, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 1991 for her role in “Ghost,” hosted the Oscar ceremony in 1994 and again in 1996. She earned Emmy nominations both times. Weekdays she can be seen in the center square in the syndicated TV show “Hollywood Squares.” Billy Crystal, who hosted the Oscar show six times and was hilarious when he did it last year, reportedly turned down an offer to return this year.
