Deliberately beating the Academy Award nominations for the year’s best films by a day, the annual Golden Raspberry Award Foundation nominations were announced Monday for Hollywood’s worst. Leading the competition were “Spice World,” “Armageddon” and “Godzilla,” with “The Avengers” doing quite well (or quite badly) for itself. John Wilson, the founder of the “Razzies,” as the award is called, said the 19th annual list represented a new low point for filmmaking, the “worst movie going year ever.” Not even “Private Ryan” and all the firepower of World War II could save 1998. Among the new Razzie categories: “Gidgets and Geezers — 58-year-old men wooing 28-year-old leading ladies,” “If You’ve Seen the Trailer Why Bother to See the Movie — previews that give away the film’s entire plot” and “30-Minutes of Story Conveyed in Less than 3 Hours — longer movies, shorter plots.” The Razzies will be given out on March 20, a day before the Oscars.

  • In the Worst Actress category, Anne Heche won a nod, but she is up against Uma Thurman for “The Avengers,” Jessica Lange for “Hush,” Yasmine Bleeth for “BASEketball” and all five Spice Girls.
