Amy Schumer Gets Serious at 'Glamour' Awards, Talks Heartbreak Over 'Trainwreck' Shooting

Schumer got real about gun control while hosting Glamour's Women of the Year Awards

Amy Schumer took the stage as host for Glamour‘s Women of The Year Awards on Monday night and found a moment to get serious.

Schumer, 34, spoke up once again about the July theater shooting during a screening of her summer film Trainwreck, saying that she is still heartbroken about the incident, and fighting for gun control.

“If you’ve been convicted of domestic violence or you’re severely mentally ill, I don’t think you should be able to get a gun,” she said. “It seems pretty simple, but people’s reaction is ‘She wants to take our guns’!”

The shooting – another in the long line of recent gun-related incidents fueling the debate over gun control – occurred in Lafayette, Louisiana and left 3 dead and 9 wounded.

Shortly after hearing the news, Schumer tweeted condolences to those affected.

“My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana,” she wrote.

Schumer also united with her cousin, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, to a launch a “crusade on guns,” campaign together following the event.

Glamour‘s awards also covered other topics including equal pay and equal access to education for girls everywhere, all discussed by some of the most powerful women in Hollywood including; Reese Witherspoon, Viola Davis and Victoria Beckham.

While her segue into political territory may have ruffled some feathers, Schumer managed to end on an encouraging and positive note.

“Let’s all just follow the lead of Glamour, and join forces and lift each other up.”
