A text exchange allegedly between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp‘s assistant purports to show a history of abuse in the couple’s relationship dating back long before their marriage.

The texts – from May 2014, four months after Depp and Heard’s engagement – appear to be a conversation between Heard and Depp’s assistant Stephen Deuters. In the exchange, Heard and Deuters discuss an alleged incident in which Depp kicked Heard. Heard also allegedly says the incident was not the first time Depp had acted violently toward her.

“He’s incredibly apologetic and knows that he has done wrong,” reads a text attributed to Deuters. “He wants to get better now.”

“Yes but I don’t know how to be around him after what he did to me yesterday. I don’t know if I can stay with him,” Heard allegedly answers.

According to TMZ, Deuters claims that the texts were doctored, and denies he ever said that Depp attacked Heard. He also says he was not aware of any incident in which Depp was allegedly abusive toward Heard, and would testify under oath he never had a conversation with Heard about alleged abuse.

The texts continue: “Obviously he has no idea what he did or the extent that he did it. If someone was truly honest with him about how bad it really was, he’d be appalled,” she allegedly says. “I’m sad that he doesn’t have a better way to really know the severity of his actions yesterday. Unfortunately for me, I remember in full detail everything that happened.”

Stephen allegedly writes back, “He was appalled. When I told him he kicked you, he cried. It was disgusting. And he knows it.”

Heard then allegedly responds, “He’s done this many times before. Tokyo, the island, London (remember that?!), and I always stay. Always believe he’s going to get better … And then every 3 or so month [sic], I’m in the exact same position.”

Deuters and reps for Depp have not responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Heard filed for divorce on May 23. On May 27 she was granted a temporary restraining order against her husband of 15 months, after she alleged in court documents that the 52-year-old actor physically abused her throughout their four-year relationship.

Along with two alleged attacks detailed in Heard’s court filings, new photos obtained by PEOPLE show the actress with physical injuries allegedly resulting from a violent encounter with the actor. A rep for Depp has not responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment about the photos.

In court documents responding to Heard’s initial court filing, Depp’s attorney, Laura Wasser, alleged that Heard “is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

The texts were first reported by Entertainment Tonight.
