Paris truly turned out to be the most romantic city in the world for Pentatonix‘s Kirstin Maldonado.

Before getting on stage to perform with her a cappella group on Monday for their world tour, the singer’s new fiancé Jeremy Michael Lewis took advantage of the romantic backdrop to surprise her with an epic proposal. “I’ve been freaking out majorly,” she gushed to PEOPLE exclusively about the happy news.

Although the pair had been planning for a future together, the star says she “didn’t expect” the proposal to happen in Paris. “Jeremy had planned to have a photographer there and he pretended to be a fan,” says Maldonado. “He came up and was like, ‘Oh my gosh, my sister’s such a big fan of you.’ He took a picture with us and he finally was like, ‘Hey, I just want to get a nice picture of you guys.'”

That’s when Maldonado’s future husband “got down on one knee and did the whole proposal thing,” she explains. “I was just so shocked because it was so out-of-the-blue and wonderful. I was so happy. There were no words!”

Aside from planning the Paris proposal (which was photographed by Paris Photographer Pierre Torset), Lewis had also been working for the past seven months on Maldonado’s new Tiffany & Co. engagement ring.

“He is so amazing and so attentive to details,” says Maldonado. “He really researched it and did everything to make sure it was perfect. It’s a flawless diamond, to which he said it’s just like me, and I laughed! But it was really sweet of him and it’s exactly what I wanted. I just really appreciate how kind it was for him to care so much about finding such a perfect thing for me that will live with us forever.”

Still basking in the happiness of their new engagement, the couple – who met in 2013 through The Sing-Off – is also in no rush to walk down the aisle. “I’m thinking a longer [engagement],” says Maldonado. “Being engaged is such a beautiful next step, and I don’t mind being in that state because it’s just so wonderful and happy.”

Adds the singer: “I think what’s really beautiful about us is that he brings me up so much. The second I met him, I was so inspired by who he was as a person. We both bring wonderful qualities to each other and that’s so important.”
