After tying the knot in an intimate ceremony in Calabasas, Calif., on March 16, Alison Eastwood and her new husband, sculptor Stacy Poitras, were the picture of wedded bliss. "We are thrilled to be surrounded by our family for this very special day," the couple told PEOPLE exclusively, "and appreciate their love and support as we begin our married life together."

Eastwood's mom Maggie was on hand for the festivities, as was her proud papa, Clint. Recalling the day he asked the legendary director-actor for permission to marry Alison, Poitras told Westlake magazine, "That was kind of intimidating ... He looked at me for four or five seconds, which felt like 15 minutes, and then he said, 'You're going to have to take that up with her.' I said, 'Is that a yes or a no?' And he said, 'That's a yes,' and he shook my hand."

At the post-ceremony reception at the Saddlepeak Lodge, Clint greeted guests with a toast to the lovebirds. "He's a cool guy," Poitras told Westlake.

Guests broke bread (and sipped champagne!) over a meal that included salmon and elk – and a vegetarian dish for the animal-loving bride.

Another pièce de résistance? The couple's red velvet wedding cake, adorned with heart-shaped icing over crimson frosting. Though they kept the guest list small, they told Westlake they were hoping nine of their 12 "children" – their dogs, cats, rabbits and rats – would attend the nuptials.

The just-married pair capped off the evening with a sweet embrace. "He's my best friend," Alison, who wore a 1930s-inspired beaded gown by Les Habitudes, told Westlake. "He's the first man who has been the closest person to me."
