Al Roker Says an N.Y.C. Cab Passed Him to Pick Up a White Man, Files Discrimination Complaint
Al Roker has filed an official complaint after he says he was passed by a New York City taxi that then picked up a white man.
The 61-year-old Today star tweeted about incident Saturday, calling it something that “happens to folks of color everyday.”
“Filed a complaint today after getting passed up again by a NYC Yellow cab,” he wrote. “Cabbie picked up a white guy a block away. Wonder why Uber wins?”
According to NYC.gov, passengers can file a complaint if a driver refuses a request for pick-up.
“It is against the law for a taxi driver on duty to refuse to pick you up because of race, disability, or destination within New York City,” the site says.
While Roker contended that “most cabbies do their job,” he added that “there are those ignorant, racist ones who hurt the others.”
“What really hurts, my 13 yr. old boy was with me and asked why the cabbie passed us,” Roker added. “I said, ‘Nick, ignorant people make dumb choices.’ ”
He said he hopes that the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission “weeds out the bad apples.”
“Looking forward to a hearing and dealing with this,” he tweeted. “I will keep you posted.”

May of Roker’s followers chimed in to share their similar experiences with the star.
“I experience it a lot,” wrote one user about dealing with racism in NYC’s public transit system.
Even Chrissy Teigen weighed in, tweeting at Roker with a joke.
“@alroker it’s just ‘cab’ now, al,” she wrote. “Wrong to call them yellow.”
