Hollywood is mourning one of it’s most recognizable faces.

Adam West, who immortalized the caped superhero for the 1960’s TV series Batman, died Friday after a short battle with leukemia at the age of 88.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

Burt Ward, the Robin to West’s Batman, also released a statement remembering his good friend and costar.

“I am devastated at the loss of one my very dearest friends,” Ward said in a statement. “Adam and I had a special friendship for more than 50 years. We shared some of the most fun times of our lives together. Our families have deep love and respect for each other. This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend. I will forever miss him. There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films. In my eyes, there was only one real Batman that is and always will be Adam West. He was truly the Bright Night.”

Ben Affleck, who plays Batman in the current version of the DC superhero film franchise, reflected on the loss of West.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, who voiced The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, called West “a wonderful actor [and] so kind.”

Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman, echoed Hamill and Ward.

“Stellar, exemplar, a king to the end,” she said in a statement. “He was bright, witty and fun to work with.  I will miss him in the physical world and savor him always in the world of imagination and creativity.  He meant so much to people – A friend said: ‘The father that we wanted.’ That is a great gift, no matter how you live it.”

Aside from Batman, West was most recently known for his work as Mayor Adam West on Family Guy. Creator Seth MacFarlane took to Twitter to remember the late voice actor.

Celebrity fans have also started remember the actor on social media for his role as the vigilante, often recalling memories of watching him as children. Kaley Cuoco posted a throwback picture of West on set of The Big Bang Theory while director Edgar Wright posted a brief tribute on his Twitter and actor Kumail Nanjiani remembered him as the “first person I saw who was funny, badass [and] cool all at the same time.”

Rocker Slash took to his Instagram where he said he was “really saddened” to hear about West’s passing.

Graphic designer Rob Sheridan praised West for being “the only Batman to punch a motherf—- shark.”

Aside from playing Batman, West was also known for his extensive voiceover work in his six-decade-long career — including his ongoing role as Mayor Adam West on Family Guy.
