Adam Levine has a voice that drives the ladies wild, and on Monday, it moved one enthusiastic female fan to jump onto the stage and try to embrace him during a Maroon 5 concert at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

PEOPLE’s 2013 Sexiest Man Alive handled the situation smoothly, at first pushing the fan away and then putting his arm around her until a security guard arrived to walk her off stage.

But he didn’t come out of the incident totally unscathed.

Levine, 36, told the crowd that the woman cut his ear with her fingernail, adding, “It’s just weird to be, like, in the moment, ya know? And you’re singing, and your eyes are closed, and you have this beautiful moment. And then the next thing you know someone’s f–––ing in your face. It’s super terrifying,” reported Entertainment Tonight.
