The Happening is one summer movie that is decidedly not kid-friendly.

Although he is most famous for his twist endings (The Sixth Sense), director M. Night Shyamalan gets downright gory in his first R-rated film, which premiered Tuesday in New York City. The doomsday thriller stars Mark Wahlberg as a father trying to keep his family safe from a mysterious airborne illness.

At Tuesday’s screening, costar Spencer Breslin, 16 – whose sister is Little Miss Sunshine actress Abigail Breslin, 12 – said he planned to cover Abigail’s eyes “a couple of times.”

But it must not have worked: Leaving the theater after the screening, Abigail told her parents, “I’m not going to sleep.”
