Aaron Carter and a friend riding with him managed to escape serious injury on a Florida highway Thursday when the singer’s 2004 Cadillac Escalade burst into flames in a bizarre accident involving a flying mattress, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Carter, 17, was behind the wheel at about 12:30 a.m. when a mattress sprung loose from the cargo bed of a delivery truck ahead of him, got stuck under Carter’s vehicle and then caught fire, probably because of the heat of the exhaust system, his spokesman, Brad Zeifman, tells the Associated Press.

Carter pulled over to the side of the road, and he and his friend jumped out of the SUV, then watched it explode in flames, Zeifman said. Both Carter and his friend were treated at the scene. Officials say that the delivery truck carrying the loose mattress never stopped.

“Everything happened in such a whirlwind,” Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter (and onetime date of Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan), said in a statement. “It was like the mattress flew out of nowhere. You think you’re invincible when you’re behind the steering wheel of an SUV, but you’re not. I’m okay, but you can imagine I’m still in shock.”
