Celebrity Aaliyah Pilot Had Cocaine in System By Stephen M. Silverman Published on November 20, 2003 11:25 AM Share Tweet Pin Email A coroner’s inquest into the 2001 death of singer Aaliyah and eight other people has revealed that drugs and alcohol were in the body of the pilot of the private plane that crashed in the Bahamas, killing all of those onboard, reports the Associated Press. Pathologist Dr. Giovander Raju has testified that pilot Luis Antonio Morales had cocaine and traces of alcohol in his system, according to Raju’s testimony at the inquest on Abaco Island in the Bahamas, where the crash occurred. The Bahamas Department of Civil Aviation disclosed the autopsy findings of cocaine and alcohol in July, notes AP. Investigators have said they believe the twin-engine Cessna 402B was overloaded by 700 pounds when it crashed shortly after takeoff. The plane was due to take the 22-year-old singer and her entourage from Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas en route to Florida on Aug. 25, 2001, following a video shoot (for “Rock the Boat”). In September, Aaliyah’s parents filed court papers saying that they had reached a settlement in a negligence lawsuit against the plane’s operator, Blackhawk International Airways Corp., owners Skystream Inc. and Gilbert Chacon and flight broker Atlantic Flight Group. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
