First Look: George Clooney, Miley Cyrus & More in A Very Murray Christmas
A Not-So Silent Night
A Very Murray Christmas was the brainchild of Bill Murray and his co-writers Sofia Coppola and Mitch Glazer. "I love when Bill sings. So one night, I was trying to talk him into singing at the Café Carlyle sometime and somehow that turned in doing a holiday special," Coppola, who also directed the Netflix original special, tells PEOPLE.
A Circle of Friends
"We have a fondness for those those old Christmas specials that were on TV in the '70s and '80s and had that corny tradition of random people stopping by," Coppola says of the special's many guest stars, including (clockwise from front row center) Paul Shaffer, Jenny Lewis, Maya Rudolph, Rashida Jones, Jason Schwartzman and Dimitri Dimitrov.
Cooking Up a Song
"It's fun to see Phoenix in there," Coppola says of including the band, whose frontman is her husband Thomas Mars (center with Murray), in the special. "I think it's nice during the holidays to have new versions of the classic songs."
A Rock But No Coal
"I've always loved Chris Rock so to get to work with him was a highlight," says Coppola. "I love that we got a mix of these comedy geniuses and different friends and people that we know."
"I think Bill is so lovable and it's fun to see him start being cranky at Christmas time and then get into the holiday spirit of just being together," Coppola says of Murray (with Amy Poehler).
A Very Miley Christmas
"Bill is friends with [George Clooney], so that's how he came on. Then, we wanted a pop starlet," says Coppola. "I had met [Miley Cyrus] through [designer] Marc Jacobs and she seemed really game and nice, so I asked through a friend. I was impressed. She was a good sport and can really sing."
