Roy English enjoys getting back to the basics.

“When I first write my songs, they are usually just my voice and a piano,” says the singer, who has released a stripped-down version of his song “Can’t Lie” exclusively on PEOPLE.

“It is really cool to get to present how the song was originally and give people that vibe and emotion because there is a different feeling that comes out when you arrange it stripped down,” says English.

The original version of the song is on his recently released EP I’m Not Here – Pt. 1.

“It was so fun just getting me and my homies together to make the video,” English says of making the video of the stripped down version. “People don’t get to see us jamming in the studio like we do.”

And soon English will be jamming with his friends, the members of 5 Seconds of Summer, when he heads out on tour with them later this year.

“I’m so excited about that,” he says of opening for his pals. “Those dudes are my family. We get to do the tour and do the shows but I also get to just hang out with my friends every day.”
