The Next Big 'Boy Band': 5 Seconds of Summer Celebrate Album Release – and Try on Thongs! – in N.Y.C. (VIDEO)
See how these pop-punk rockers are primed to be the next big thing from Down Under
Pop-punk group 5 Seconds of Summer released their self-titled debut album in the United States on Tuesday, but this so-called “boy band” from Australia is already a worldwide phenomenon.
While the group – made up of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin – doesn’t have the typical “boy band” sound or choreographed dance moves, they do have the following.
5 Seconds of Summer’s Twitter account has close to four million followers, many of whom have a Belieber-esque dedication to the band. Meanwhile, 5SOS’s February 2014 single “She Looks So Perfect” topped the iTunes charts in 39 different countries in just two days, as reported by Digital Spy, with the song’s music video reaching over 55 million views on YouTube.
This success is set to follow 5 Seconds of Summer as they venture across the U.S. Although their debut album just arrived Stateside on Tuesday, the band has encountered screaming fans at every turn of their U.S. press tour.
The guys celebrated their big release with an early performance at the TODAY show in New York City on Tuesday, drawing one of the largest crowds the concert series has seen.
“Seriously, this is the most incredible thing that’s probably ever happened to us. Right now. It’s amazing,” said Irwin, the band’s drummer, about the show. (The gaggles of girls who showed up for the set clearly felt the same way.)
The band also stopped by MTV on Monday to compete in a thong-wearing contest. Each guy raced to see how many pairs of panties he could put on in a limited time. The cheeky game was created in reference to a lyrical verse (“You look so perfect standing there in my American Apparel underwear”) from “She Looks So Perfect.” Oh boy!
Looks like America is treating these Aussies well, and their journey has only just begun. For those hooked on 5 Seconds of Summer’s pop-punk sound (or good looks), the alt-boy band will take the stage at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 24.
