Nominated for: Golden Globe Award, actor in a drama; Golden Globe Award, actor in a comedy
His comedic timing earned him a nomination for Crazy, Stupid, Love and his gritty dramatic skills landed him a nod for Ides of March – but one of the actor's most beloved qualities was sorely overlooked this awards season: his abs. As costar Emma Stone cried, "You look like you're photoshopped!" PEOPLE's movie critic agreed, saying, "When an Oscar-worthy actor takes a devastatingly sexy role just for kicks, it's ice cream and unicorns for all."

The Moneyball actor scored a home run with his turn as Oakland A's manager Billy Beane, even though Pitt admitted to Sports Illustrated, "It's shameful how little I know about baseball. I'm amazed they let me do this movie." One thing he knows for sure: How to make the ladies swoon. (Hey, he wasn't named Sexiest Man Alive twice for nothing!)

The oft-nominated but rarely winning actor (his last big get was a 2004 Golden Globe for Aviator) is doubly nominated this season for his turn in J. Edgar. We can't promise he'll take home a statue, but who cares as long as he looks dashing on the red carpet.

The kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun is officially a Hollywood contender, following up well-received turns in (500) Days of Summer and Inception with 50/50, which netted him his first Golden Globe nomination. But it's his good looks – developed seemingly overnight – that spawned an an Internet trend called "He Will Never Have a Girlfriend" – ha! – and earned him the unofficial title of "indie heartthrob."

He bares all – quite often – in Shame, but the actor joked to New York magazine that he was just trying to level the playing field. The Wire vet got a nod for his devilish turn in the BBC's Luther, and it's a safe bet that regardless of whether the handsome 6'3" actor takes home an award, he'll be looking to celebrate post-Globes. After all, he once admitted during an interview with PEOPLE, "I have [a hangover] right now, but I'm having a really good time because I just plucked the hair of the dog that bit me last night, so I'm still going."

The lovable Modern Family dad earned a place in PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive list this year by proving that funny guys are seriously sexy. Still, he joked that a hazard of his job – wearing makeup – made him very unsexy in the eyes of one particular person: his dad! "'Why do you have to look like a harlot?'" Burrell imagined his father asking as the actor accepted his Emmy. "I would say, 'Dad, just think of me as a very masculine lady.' "
