007 Is No. 1

The unlikely tandem of James Bond — in his 19th screen adventure — and Ichabod Crane combined for what is possibly shaping up to be a record-setting weekend at the box office. The 007 caper, “The World Is Not Enough” with Pierce Brosnan, posted MGM’s largest opening three-day weekend ever. “Sleepy Hollow,” the Tim Burton-directed version of Washington Irving’s story, stars Johnny Depp. If the following estimates for the Friday-to-Sunday period hold, studio executives say it will mark the first time two films opening on the same weekend each grossed more than $30 million.

1. “The World is Not Enough,” $37.2 million
2. “Sleepy Hollow,” $30.5 million
3. “Pokémon: The First Movie,” $13.3 million
4. “The Bone Collector,” $6.5 million
5. “Dogma,” $4.1 million
6. “Anywhere But Here,” $3.3 million
7. “The Insider,” $2.9 million
8. “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc,” $2.5 million
9. “The Bachelor,” $2.4 million
10. “Being John Malkovich,” $1.9 million
