Sean Hayes is adding to his list of accomplishments.

The Will & Grace star and his husband Scott Icenogle have co-written a Nutcracker-inspired Christmas book for children called Plum, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal.

“The story is about a little orphan girl named Plum who desires a family of her own one day. When a blizzard threatens to ruin Christmas, Plum starts on an amazing adventure,” Hayes says. “She journeys to the Land of Sweets, but finds that it is turning sour because of a mysterious sadness in the kingdom. Plum has to find a way to save the kingdom, and if she does, she might just find her greatest wish come true!”

“I think Plum is the perfect reflection of the magic of Christmas that is inside all of us, regardless of age,” he adds. “Plum’s fantastical adventure is something everyone wishes was their own. Readers will enjoy Plum’s spunky optimism and will relate to the belief that anything is possible. Not only does it give children a glimpse into the past of one of the most beloved characters from one of the most beloved stories of all time, but it allows its authors a chance to relive a part of their own childhood.”

For the couple, who tied the knot in 2014, writing a book together had always been on their bucket list.

“We had spoken for years about writing a children’s book,” Hayes says. “Mostly for the same reason we made those silly Facebook/YouTube lip-sync videos: the challenge. Once we both agreed that it should be from The Nutcracker — something we both revered from our childhoods — the idea just started flowing out of us. Since we don’t have children, we get to virtually adopt Plum into our lives. She’s a special girl.”

Adds Hayes, “Plum has the courage that I wish I had as a kid. Her fearlessness coupled with her curiosity is the perfect recipe for achieving a goal.”

Hayes, who just recently starred on the revived Will & Grace, hopes this won’t be their last gig, but only the beginning of a beautiful journey.

“We are in love with the story of Plum and would love to keep her story going, should people respond positively to her journey and the world we’ve created,” he says. “But we’ve also got several other ideas up our little sleeves that aren’t related to The Nutcracker!”

Plum will be released by Simon & Schuster in November 2018.
