'She Persisted' : Chelsea Clinton's New Picture Book Stars 13 Women Who 'Changed the World'

Chelsea Clinton has written a new illustrated book, She Persisted, about 13 American women who “changed the world.”

Clinton took to Twitter on Thursday morning to break the news and unveil the book’s cover.

“Persistence has changed the course of history,” she wrote. “I’m so excited to share stories of girls & women who didn’t take no for answer on May 30th!”

The book’s title is an abbreviated version of “nevertheless, she persisted,” the words top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell used to silence Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren after she attempted to protest Jeff Sessions’s attorney general nomination last month. The phrase quickly became a rallying cry for Warren supporters and proponents of women’s rights.

The 13 women featured in the picture book include Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Nellie Bly, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Clara Lemlich, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, and Sonia Sotomayor, EW reported.

The book will also feature a cameo by another important female figure, but it’s not known whether the mystery woman is Clinton’s mother, former first lady, secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Clinton, who is also the author of the 2015 children’s book It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going, said in a statement issued by the publisher, Penguin Young Readers, “I wrote this book for everyone who’s ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who’s ever been made to feel less than.”

“The 13 women in She Persisted all overcame adversity to help shape our country — sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience,” the statement continued. “With this book, I want to send a message to young readers around the country — and the world — that persistence is power.”
