A Michigan woman turned an unpleasant experience at her local Tim Hortons into an opportunity to pay it forward.
Dianne Hoffmeyer was in line for coffee and donut holes with her 22-month-old teething daughter at the Fort Gratiot coffee shop when she overheard two women making comments about her appearance.
“‘Oh look at her hair, it’s nasty looking and the roots are coming through’,” Hoffmeyer told WXYZ Denver of the women’s remarks. “‘Oh she’s a whale, oh the whale needs to eat.'”
Instead of fighting back with more mean words, the 41-year-old decided to rise above.
“To show that my mother raised me better, I’d like to say YOUR WELCOME,” she wrote in a now-viral Facebook post, which is no longer live, recounting the experience. “Because this ‘Fat Retarded Lard A**’ paid it forward and I bought your coffee’s this morning.”
Hoffmeyer was especially offended by the remarks about her weight because she recently lost 177 lbs.
“I am proud of myself,” she wrote. “You both should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Since the incident, Hoffmeyer has received a gift card from the Tim Hortons, offers from beauty salons to do her hair, and a mountain of support from other mothers, according to The Times Herald.
“One positive action in a negative moment has caused a tsunami of friendship for me with moms that are going through the same thing,” she said.
