Meg Ryan on Aging in Hollywood: 'There Are More Important Conversations Than How Women Look'
"I love my age. I love my life right now," Ryan tells Porter
Meg Ryan is 54 and loving it – but that doesn’t mean she wants her age to become a headline.
“There are more important conversations than how women look and how they are aging,” Ryan tells Net-A-Porter’s Porter for the magazine’s Winter Escape issue. “I love my age. I love my life right now. I love what I know about. I love the person I’ve become, the one I’ve evolved into.”
Ryan, who stepped behind the camera for the first time last year to direct the upcoming drama Ithaca, says after a life of being “scrappy as hell” she finally feels “easy” with the way things are.
“I think that comes with age,” she says. “We get stuck in these conversations about looks and hair color and our roots. It’s interesting and funny for five minutes, but it’s not that interesting.”
The actress appears happy and relaxed in the Porter cover story, with images taken by famed photographer Pamela Hanson at Ryan’s Martha’s Vineyard home on Chappaquiddick Island.
While she is obviously privy to Hollywood scrutiny, Ryan admits that she doesn’t “pay a lot of attention” to industry gossip.
“There’s a lot of hatred in the world today, it’s so easy to judge,” she says. “Imagine being a hater, how stupid!”

Ryan, who directed her often-collaborator Tom Hanks in Ithaca (“He’s a dream”), says she regards fame as a “condition” rather than an “affliction,” an attitude that’s helped her through a decades-long career.
“It’s definitely something I have had an evolving relationship to,” the mom of two admits of being famous. “I’m the kind of person who doesn’t want to be separated out … Fame is so cheap. Actually it’s not cheap, it’s privacy that is expensive.”
The star says her own celebrity is not her focus, and while she’s “on a little break” from romance (she recently split from boyfriend John Mellencamp), Ryan is happy.
“I’m with my life right now in a way that I adore, with my kids and my world.”
