Is that you, Jake?

First, Jake Gyllenhaal went lean and mean, losing nearly 30 lbs. to play an unhinged videographer in Nightcrawler, now in theaters. For his next movie, Southpaw, he’s transformed himself again, packing on major muscle to play a middleweight boxer struggling to make a comeback.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer), Southpaw costars Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis Jackson (aka rapper 50 Cent) and Naomie Harris.

“Jake is going to change how people see him,” Fuqua told Deadline Hollywood. “I had him training twice a day in the boxing ring.”

The 33-year-old sparred with real fighters at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas and Church Gym in New York City. Adds Fuqua: “We literally turned him into a beast.”
