Body shaming and feeling self-conscious are issues for people of all sizes, but especially those who are overweight.

Using the viral hashtag #FatSideStories, people are turning to Twitter to share their own struggles with being a self-proclaimed “fat” person in 140 characters or less.

“Your thin friends complaining about being/feeling SO FAT and expecting commiseration,” wrote Heidi Belleau.

“When the first bullies in your life are your family,” shared @Artists_Ali.

“Being told ‘You’re not fat, you’re beautiful,’ as though those things are mutually exclusive,” tweeted Payton Quinn.

“Being terrified to eat in front of anyone in public at meal times,” shared @ptxnotonfire.

“Never being able to shake the feeling that when people show romantic interest they’re just doing it as a cruel joke,” wrote @lonerblvd.

“Every time you see yourself represented in popular media, it’s as an idiot or a food-obsessed ogre,” shared Mary Sweet.

The hashtag seems to have been started on August 9 by user Your Fat Friend, who asked “fellow fats” to share their “awful dating stories.”

However, the types of stories people have shared have gone far beyond that since then.
