Sick of hearing that she can’t wear skin-baring clothes because of her size, Los Angeles-based model and blogger Simone Mariposa is starting a body-positive revolution with her #WeWearWhatWeWant hashtag.

Mariposa started tweeting about how frustrated she was with society’s rules about how she and other curvy women should dress.

“Every plus size girl has had to bear the terrible brunt of being judged/policed for what we wear & how we wear it,” she writes. “Stop making it ‘unacceptable’ for plus women to wear clothes that show skin. It’s not your job to make our wardrobes.”

Mariposa says that she stopped worrying about other people’s opinions about her clothes.

“I no longer allow people to dictate what I should and shouldn’t wear,” she says. “Showing skin isn’t exclusive to smaller girls. It’s okay for a plus size woman to let her body breathe in her clothing.”

Her tweets got hundreds of likes and retweets, with one fan suggesting that she start hashtag where women can post photos “wearing socially ‘unacceptable’ outfits.” Inspired, Mariposa created the hashtag #WeWearWhatWeWant, and it quickly exploded with responses.

“I’ve been waiting my whole life for a hashtag like this,” one woman writes.

“#wewearwhatwewant because a size 22 isn’t a sin and I’m fine with the body I’m in,” adds another.

“I wear the biggest size of hot pants and I don’t care what they say,” says one woman.

Mariposa says she’s been overwhelmed by the positive response.

“These past two days have been amazing,” she says. “I didn’t even expect #WeWearWhatWeWant to be so big & popular, but I’m so happy!”

“So glad that a simple five word hashtag has inspired so many women to love themselves. That’s truly all that matters.”
