Cindy Crawford hopes to follow in the footsteps of ageless beauties Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda as she gets older.

“Women like Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda, they look amazing and they look appropriate,” the model, 49, told PEOPLE at a party celebrating her new book Becoming in Los Angeles on Friday hosted by Guthy Renker. “They look amazing but they’re not trying to look 30.”

And neither is Crawford.

“I don’t want to be trying to compete with my 14-year-old daughter [Kaia Gerber] – because I would lose!” she joked.

Even though she’s not trying to look like a teenager, Crawford says has no plans to let herself go now that she’s approaching 50.

“I always thought, ‘When can I just let it all go?’ ” she said. “It’s just never. There is no age now!”

Crawford is celebrating her upcoming birthday milestone with her book, which pairs iconic photographs from her career along with personal essays.

“It was the aspect of embracing turning 50 and celebrating the past, but at the same time I am embracing where I am,” she said about the concept.

When she actually began writing, she was pleasantly surprised by her publisher’s reaction to her essays.

“When I met with the president of Rizzoli, the first thing that he said was, ‘I love the writing!’ ” she said. “I was like, ‘Wow, you think that I’m a good writer?!’ It was stroking my ego, but whatever!”
