Awards Wahlberg, DiCaprio Turn Out at Film Critics' Awards The Departed stars support Martin Scorsese, who won best director By People Staff Published on January 8, 2007 10:55 AM Share Tweet Pin Email Some of the first honors of the season were handed out Sunday at the New York Film Critics Circle awards – and Departed stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg turned out to support Martin Scorsese, who won for best director. Wahlberg, for one, hopes Scorsese will win again at the Oscars. “I’m surprised he doesn’t have eight or nine of them at home already, but hopefully I’m in the movie that he finally wins for,” Wahlberg told the BBC. “I think he’s certainly long overdue. He’s an amazing talent.” The NYFCC awards are considered good predictors of the Oscar nominations, and two of Sunday night’s big winners – best actor Forest Whitaker, for The Last King Of Scotland, and best actress Helen Mirren, for The Queen, are already up for Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe awards. Among the other winners: United 93, about the heroic passengers on the doomed 9/11 flight, was named best picture, Dreamgirls’ Jennifer Hudson won for best supporting actress and Little Children’s Jackie Earle Haley was named best supporting actor. Mirren and Whittaker also took home acting prizes Saturday in New York City at the annual meeting of the National Society of Film Critics, the Associated Press reports. Best supporting actor honors went to Wahlberg for The Departed and Meryl Streep for both The Devil Wears Prada and A Prairie Home Companion, and the gothic fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth, from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, was named best picture. Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 23; the awards ceremony will take place Feb. 25.
