“I just left New Orleans where I was shooting with [her]. I have bruises up and down my legs from fighting with Sofia in this fight sequence,” the Wild actress, 38, told reporters Monday at the Oscars Nominees Luncheon about shooting their upcoming film Hot Pursuit together. “So that’s basically how I prepare wrestling with Sofia Vergara. It actually is really good for your skin [and] gets your muscles going.”
Jokes aside, the nomination this time around (the star won Best Actress in 2006 for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line) feels “different,” she said. “I’ve never been so challenged before physically [and] emotionally by a story.”
Witherspoon, who said she started her production company “two years ago because I saw six of my favorite actresses fighting over a really crappy role,” served as both the star and a producer on the film – something that she’s very proud of.
“I feel like I really fought for this movie to get made,” she said. “The greatest gift of my professional life is that Cheryl Strayed gave me this opportunity to play her in a movie.”
Added the actress: “All those days hiking up mountains and crossing freezing rivers carrying equipment feels very hard-won. To see the response my fans have been having to the film and Cheryl’s fans has been the most rewarding in my career.”
