When you’re up against Jay Z, Drake, Nicki Minaj and T.I., winning favorite hip-hop artist at the People’s Choice Awards would come as a surprise for anyone – even Iggy Azalea.
“I wasn’t expecting this so I wrote nothing, but it’s not wasted on me,” the rapper said in her acceptance speech Wednesday night.
She may not have had a speech ready to go but Dax Shepard, who presented the award with Monica Potter, was prepared with a joke or two for the star-studded crowd at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
“We were asked to present favorite hip-hop artist award because we’re both over 40 and super duper white,” Shepard said.
“And don’t forget suburban!” Potter added.
Shepard also claimed to have “as much street cred as some of the other popular people in this category.”
“Like Drake and I for instance have both been arrested the same amount of times. Zero times for both of us and one for Monica,” Shepard said. “They used to arrest people for streaking.”
Azalea seemed pleased to be presented with an award from Shepard, who stars in Parenthood.
“This is very weird that you’re giving me this because I was up very late last night watching you on television,” she said. “You look much much better in person.”
