It’s been a year of ups and downs for Dan Bucatinsky.

From his Scandal character, James, getting cruelly killed off (and his husband, Cyrus, moving on to a male prostitute super fast, by the way) to a big career Comeback, it’s hard for the actor/producer/writer to pick a highlight.

“I died on a show that I was beloved on,” he said on the red carpet for the PEOPLE Magazine Awards on Thursday. “It was also the year that I joined the cast of Marry Me on NBC, and I’m having the time of my life, and this year we brought The Comeback back, so I think 2014 will go down in history as, like, the circle of life.”

Though he’s off the set of ABC’s sudsy political soap, Bucatinsky, 49, is still close to the show’s star, Kerry Washington. And like everyone everywhere, he’s totally in awe of the actress – who, by the way, got him “completely addicted to pineapple.”

“I have spoken many, many times about my love of Kerry Washington as a person, as a leader of a troupe of actors on a show,” he told PEOPLE. “She is hilarious, she is smart, she makes you think, she makes you better. I love her!”
