It’s a sentiment that fits the holiday season perfectly: Kate Hudson and Nicole Richie say family is what inspires them.

After her win for Celebrity Role Model at the PEOPLE Magazine Awards on Thursday, Hudson said her mom, Goldie Hawn, is her hero, telling PEOPLE, “She’s kind of awesome.”

“My [role model is] easy, mine’s my mom,” Hudson, 35, said backstage. “My children are my role models, too. I think you learn a lot from your kids – the purity and the innocence of how they attack things and how they communicate is inspirational.”

Richie, who introduced Hudson for the award by saying “she truly defines what it means to be a role model,” agrees that her parents, including dad Lionel Richie, are her superstars.

“Your family, they shape who you are. Both my mother and my father were the first people that I would look at and listen to,” she told PEOPLE. “They really shaped who I am and the parent that I am now.”

Richie, 33, joked that she hopes to not only be as inspirational as her parents were to her, “but better.”
