The 2016 Oscars are airing live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles
Sam Smith is adding an Oscar to the shelf this year!
Smith and songwriter Jimmy Napes took the stage together, where the singer dedicated the award to the LGBT community.
“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case – even if it isn’t the case – I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world,” Smith said. “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man, and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day.”
The song was up against The Weeknd‘s "Earned It" from Fifty Shades of Grey, “Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction, “Simple Song #3” from Youth and Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s "Til It Happens to You" from The Hunting Ground.
