The 9-year-old Room star was greeted with a huge round of applause when he arrived at the Oscars on Sunday, and his red carpet interviews were just as delightful as we expected.
First and foremost, Tremblay explained the story behind the hilarious picture he snapped with Sylvester Stallone at the Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills earlier this month, where he jokingly delivering a punch to Rocky Balboa himself.
“You know why I punched him? ‘Cause he was in a supporting role and ’cause I’m supporting for Brie [Larson],” Tremblay told E! News’ Ryan Seacrest. “[It was] a joke – I punched him in the face ’cause he took my spot in the best supporting male [actor].”
Indeed, Stallone beat out Tremblay at the Critics’ Choice Awards in January, when he took home the award for best supporting actor.
As for who Tremblay’s rooting for at the Oscars, that’s easy: his Room costar!
“Brie! I want Brie to win,” he said.
Plus, he has a pretty good track record: “Last year I was rooting for Eddie Redmayne, and then he won!”
Tremblay also spoke with PEOPLE on the carpet, telling Alicia Quarles he’s most looking forward to presenting: “I’m just waiting for my turn to be onstage!”
And while he’s “almost met everyone” in the celeb circles, there’s one person still on his list: “I will make sure I get a picture with the [vice] president,” he said.
Tremblay also dished about his super-sharp Armani tux.
“It’s pretty cool. I added some stuff because an interviewer named Ben gave me cufflinks and I’m wearing [Darth Vader socks], the Star Wars superfan said.
The 88th annual Awards, hosted by Chris Rock, will be presented live on ABC at 8:30 p.m. ET from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
