There is always at least one musical act at the Oscars that amps up the energy and elicits a unanimous smile from the crowd. Last year, Pharrell Williams electrified the room with “Happy,” and this year, Tegan and Sara’s “Everything Is Awesome” – quite literally – made everything awesome.

The Canadian singer-songwriter duo joined forces onstage with musical comedy trio The Lonely Island, who wrote the tune with Shawn Patterson, Joshua Bartholomew and Lisa Harriton for the animated adventure hit The Lego Movie.

The chirpy track got Channing Tatum and Oprah Winfrey clapping and dancing along in their seats with Oscar statuettes made from yellow Legos. It also marked funnyman Andy Samberg‘s singing debut onstage at an Oscar ceremony.

As for twin sisters Tegan and Sara? The electronic dance tune, which charted at No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, was slightly off the beaten path for the indie pop musicians.

“We want to be a serious musical band, while also being funny people. But this was so adorable, and the movie looked great, and the opportunity to do something with Mark Mothersbaugh and The Lonely Island, it was sort of a no-brainer,” Sara Quin told Billboard in an interview.

“It’s turned out to be this really cool moment. We feel like it was a win-win,” she said.

It may not have been awesome that The Lego Movie didn’t snag a spot in the Best Animated Feature category. But the Oscar night performance was still a fun and bubbly tribute to the blockbuster film.

The 2015 Oscars, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris from the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, are airing live on ABC.
