Nearly three months after Joan Rivers unexpectedly died last September, her presence has been felt on every red carpet during the past awards season.

The comedian, who was 81 at the time of her death, is often credited with coining the phrase “Who are you wearing?” and made must-watch television of the pre-shows that were typically consider filler programming before she stormed the carpet in the early ’90s.

Rivers’s daughter, Melissa, paid tribute to her brassy, iconic mother in a video tribute that aired on E! during Sunday afternoon’s Academy Awards pre-show.

Melissa, 47, who serves as executive producer on Fashion Police – a show that was born directly from her mother’s work – introduced the three-minute package, saying: “It’s hard to believe it was 20 years ago that my mother and I stood on this very red carpet for the first time. We didn’t know that, what was happening was, walking into a building was turning into an event.”

Melissa also added, “My mom asked questions that nobody else dared to ask.”

Case in point: “What do you weigh?” was just one of the red carpet shockers (that one went to Sarah Jessica Parker). Another: “Are you engaged?” – that one was posed to William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman – and when he confirmed the engagement, Joan urged, “Get a bigger ring!”

Melissa also paid tribute to her mother on social media Thursday with a #TBT post celebrating their years as red carpet partners.

Melissa finished the memorial reel, saying: “So here I am, 20 years later – one last Oscars, one last red carpet and one last time to say, ‘Back to you, mom.’ ”
