Dakota Johnson might be all about Christian Grey while in character in the Red Room, but on the Oscars red carpet it was all about mom.
Johnson, 25, brought her famous mother, Melanie Griffith, as her date to the awards show Sunday night.
“I am a very proud mom,” Griffith told ABC’s On the Red Carpet as her daughter rubbed her back.
When the reporter pressed for more – calling Griffith “a very quiet mom” – she replied, “It’s my time to be quiet.”
Johnson, meanwhile, reacted like any daughter momentarily embarrassed by her mother, rolling her eyes and exclaiming, “Mom! Oh my god!”
(In a later interview with ABC, Griffith opened up a bit more, saying, “I think she’s doing amazingly well. And I’m proud of her for all the things she does.”)
To be fair, the spotlight is squarely on Johnson these days, who stars as Anastasia Steele in the wildly successful film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.
The duo also spoke to ABC’s Lara Spencer before the show, and Griffith confirmed that she has not seen Shades – even if her daughter doesn’t mind her watching.
“I don’t think I can,” Griffith said. “I think it would be strange.”
“No, I don’t think so,” Johnson countered. “I think it’s fine. I think that one day you can see it.”
“She’s a really good actress. I don’t have to see that to know how good she is,” Griffith added later, which clearly irked her daughter.
“All right. You don’t have to see it,” Johnson retorted, before adding something that got bleeped out.
Johnson will present at the awards show Sunday, and admitted the attention is getting to her.
“I get extremely nervous, but it’ll be fun,” she said during their initial interview for On the Red Carpet.
Another thing that got her flustered?
A flashback video featuring her on the red carpet as a child in 2000, flanked by Griffith and Antonio Banderas.
“Look at me! I’m so uncomfortable! What am I saying?” she said as the clip rolled.
And what color was the dress she wore way back when?
Gray – obviously.
