Lin-Manuel Miranda & Hamilton Cast Celebrate Musical's Historic Tony Nominations Haul
Lin-Manuel Miranda took to Twitter to congratulate all of this year's nominees
The 2016 Tony Awards are still a few weeks away, but the cast of Hamilton has already notched a spectacular victory: The blockbuster musical scored a historic 16 nominations Tuesday, the most for any show in the awards’ history.
The show was recognized in nearly every category: writing, music, directing, costumes and design. Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda nabbed three nominations for himself in the best book of a musical and best original score category. He will also face-off with costar Leslie Odom Jr. for best leading actor in a musical.
Hamilton costars Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson and Daveed Diggs also find themselves battling it out for the best featured actor in a musical award.
Miranda took to Twitter to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and post a humorous GIF hinting that there would be plenty of celebration at the Richard Rodgers Theatre later in the evening.
“Congrats to EVERYONE this season,” he said. “You got your show up. You get to do what you love. You’re in the play.”
He also joked that following the nominations announcement he did a “fafillion” phone interviews.

“Watched the Tony noms with my baby girl this morning! I am so grateful for her and for all of God’s perfect blessings! I am so humbled by this nomination. And I am high on all this love ,” she wrote.
“CONGRATULATIONS to my friends and colleagues,” best lead actress nominee Phillipa Soo tweeted. “So grateful to be a part of this theatrical community.
Set designer David Korins also took to Instagram to call Hamilton his “lucky number 13” for earning him his first Tony nomination.
“Lucky number 13. @Hamiltonmusical was my 13th Broadway show & my 1st @tonyawards nom,” he wrote. “Thank you to my supportive family & my team in the studio led by this guy who has been working side by side w me in some way shape or form for 17 years.”

And before Diggs had a chance to let news of his best featured actor nomination sink in, he had a few unexpected house guests arrive to congratulate him.
“Soooo my brother and @RafaelCasal broke into my apartment this morning Ha!” he tweeted along with a video of the surprise.
Since its debut last summer, the musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton has already won a Grammy for best musical theater album, a Pulitzer Prize for drama and has grossed more than $60 million at the box office.
