Actress and mother Kate Hudson was honored with the Role Model award at the PEOPLE Magazine Awards on Thursday night.

“This is a beautiful honor,” said Hudson, 35, as she accepted the accolade. “Life is a journey with its ups and downs, its challenges and its triumphs. Don’t ever let anyone ever push you around.”

The award was presented to her at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles by her good friend and fellow mother of two Nicole Richie.

“She has always been someone I respect, not just for her talent but she truly defines what it means to be a role model,” said Richie, 33.

While juggling the responsibilities of raising her two sons, Ryder, 10, and Bingham, 3, and assisting her mom, Goldie Hawn, with her nonprofit charity, Love In for Kids, Hudson also starred this year in the Zach Braff-directed film Wish I Was Here.

Hudson is also a dedicated businesswoman – her athletic apparel line, Fabletics, is designed for women of every size and the brand’s website features monthly picks from the star herself.

Though Hudson has been in the news lately for her split from Muse front man Matt Bellamy, the couple remain happy and committed co-parents to Bingham – who she says is a little "fireball".
