John Travolta Finally Explains Infamous Idina Menzel/Adele Dazeem Gaffe

A stuck elevator, a chance encounter with Goldie Hawn, and a phonetic spelling gone wrong

Was it all Goldie Hawn’s fault?

The Academy Awards on Sunday gave John Travolta the chance to finally exorcise his demons from the 2014 Oscars, when he infamously mispronounced Idina Menzel’s name as “Adele Dazeem.”

He shared the stage with Menzel on Sunday – and got her name right! – as they presented the Oscar for Best Original Song. Then later, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Travolta gave his official version of events on how he flubbed her name so spectacularly a year ago.

And it really is quite the farce. Check out the video below for the story – which involves someone stuck in an elevator, a backstage run-in with Goldie Hawn and a phonetic spelling of Menzel’s name, which Travolta wasn’t expecting.

Not that Menzel, 43, has any hard feelings. She amusingly introduced Travolta, 61, as “Glom Gazingo” on Sunday, and he says she’s long since forgiven him for last year.

“The beautiful news, and Idina actually agrees, is that she’s had one of the best years of her life, and her career. And she gives me credit!” he says.
