Jason Aldean‘s on a winning streak. The country star took home the Academy of Country Music’s award for male vocalist of the year on Sunday, but it’s his new wife Brittany Kerr that he can’t stop gushing about.

“Yesterday was a month in,” he told PEOPLE in the 2015 ACM Awards press room. “It’s been great, we’ve been on the road pretty much the whole time since we got married. We’ve gone all over the country and Europe for 10 days.”

Aldean, 38, tied the knot with Kerr, 27, in a surprise Mexico wedding this past March. The pair were first linked in 2012, and got engaged in September 2014.

Aldean, who performed a medley of his hit songs “Tonight Looks Good on You,” “My Kinda Party” and “She’s Country” at Sunday’s awards, also spoke about Kerr’s positive impact on his life.

“She keeps me a little more focused and grounded, which is what I need in my life for sure,” he said.

Alden also recalled his humble origins as a musician, telling PEOPLE: “It seems like a lifetime ago, but every one of us in that room tonight, we all started in similar scenarios. I was on a sidewalk with a guitar that I couldn’t play worth a crap. I think people felt sorry for me and gave me money.”

Aldean was up against fellow artists Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley for the coveted award, which he’s won three times prior.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d be part of this show or winning awards – are you kidding me?” said Aldean. “But the American dream is alive and kicking, and I’m proof that it can be.”
