In a surprising and sweet victory, Gina Rodriguez won the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV series, musical or comedy, for playing the title role in Jane The Virgin.

“Thank you God for making me an artist,” she said as she accepted the award with tears in her eyes.

The award was presented by Kerry Washington and Bryan Cranston at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

“This award is so much more than myself,” Rodriguez also said in her speech. “It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”

Rodriguez, 30, was up against Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep, Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, Lena Dunham for Girls, and Taylor Schilling for Orange is the New Black.

The 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards were hosted for the third time by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
