Eddie Redmayne is one happily married man, and he’s not afraid to shout it from the rooftops.

“I love married life!” he declared after bagging the best actor prize at Sunday’s British Academy Film Awards. He made his remarks backstage at London’s Royal Opera House during winners’ press conference.

Earlier in the evening, The Theory of Everything leading man, 33, walked the red carpet, often stopping to offer an affectionate hug or put his arm around his new wife, Hannah Bagshawe. Wearing a pewter-embellished gown by Valentino, she seemed in awe of the scene before her – hordes of fans screaming her husband’s name.

“It does feel very surreal,” Redmayne told PEOPLE. “But I don’t think you can take it too seriously, because you know it could be gone in a shot.”

He told reporters on the red carpet that he thought he wife found the whole scene “quite funny.”

Besides being nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking in the biopic, Redmayne has already won a Golden Globe and a SAG award for the challenging role.

He recovered from the “very intense shoot, which took its toll,” he said, by taking time to practice his culinary skills. “Hannah works,” he said. “She has a proper job so I cooked dinner!”

Attending the Globes actually forced them to cut their honeymoon short – but Redmayne hopes to set that right. After finishing his next film, The Danish Girl (which starts filming next week), the Brit is planning on taking his wife on vacation.

“The plan is to go and sit on a beach somewhere – she certainly deserves it,” he said, adding, “[I can] get a few more freckles.”
