A year ago tonight, Brett Eldredge reached a new level.

The “Lose My Mind” singer took home the 2014 CMA for best new artist, a title that “launched my career into a crazy place,” he told PEOPLE at the BMI Awards Tuesday night, “I have four No. 1s now, my album debuted at No. 1 – I think a lot of it had to do with that award.”

And now it s all coming full circle: The singer-songwriter, 29, will be presenting the award for best new artist at the 2015 CMAs.

Eldredge may be at the top of the country music scene, but he still admits to having two left feet: He and Thomas Rhett performed in New York City Thursday night where the two tried to recreate Silenté’s viral “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” dance.

“I think it’s funny to watch Brett try to dance” Rhett told PEOPLE.

The nominees for this year s best new artist include Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt, Maddie & Tae, Thomas Rhett and Chris Stapleton.

“I can t wait to hand it off and give it to the next person,” he says.

The CMAs air Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
