Adele Says She 'Cried Pretty Much All Day' After Technical Difficulties Marred Her Grammys Performance
“During changeover and the ad break, the microphones fell onto the piano strings, which is what the guitar noise was – some people thought it was [Justin] Bieber rehearsing but it wasn’t him,” she joked. “And it just kinda put the whole thing off, really.”
Adele explained that she immediately noticed something was wrong but wasn’t able to fix it.
“I knew where the mic was and I wanted to turn around and lift it up, but I froze,” she said. “But I actually felt like it went well … I’m always a bit pitchy anyway.”
When DeGeneres’ audience protested this slight against Adele’s seemingly perfect voice, she laughed and argued, “I am, it’s emotion, it’s emotion, when I’m flat and I’m sharp I’m just emotional!”
She also talked about the aftermath of the performance, which she said left her “so embarrassed.”
“I cried pretty much all day [Tuesday],” she said. “In fairness, I would’ve cried if it had gone really well as well. … I kept spontaneously bursting into tears yesterday but it was all right, I’m fine.”
Then she explained that she “still” feels nervous before performing. In fact, Adele experiences stage fright “more than ever” before following her recording-breaking album 25 and upcoming sold-out tour.
“The more successful I get, the more pressure there is – really,” she shared. “I don’t feel like it could go that much worse than the Grammys, though. So I feel like I’m alright now. Anything that happens is like, ‘Dust it off.'”
And don’t worry – she has a plan for the next time something like this happens.
“Next time I have any sound issues, I am gonna stop. ‘Sorry, that’s not working for me, if we have time to do it again, let’s do it. Otherwise, bye,’ ” she joked after explaining that if the Grammys hadn’t been broadcast on live TV, “I would’ve busted a joke, but because it was TV I couldn’t make it my own.”
