I had never seen Wynonna look so happy. She did not stop smiling all night,” says one guest at country star Wynonna Judd’s 2003 wedding to Dan Roach, where, after a candlelit ceremony, the couple danced to “Over the Rainbow.” Now a very dark cloud has set in. On March 22 Roach was arrested and later indicted on three counts of aggravated sexual battery against a minor under age 13. Soon after the news broke, Judd, 42, released a statement that she’d filed for divorce. “I am obviously devastated,” said the singer. “Our family will pull together, begin the healing process and hopefully—by the grace of God—become stronger.”

At the time of his arrest, Roach, 49, was at Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap, Texas, for drug and alcohol addiction, according to Judd’s statement. (Judd herself got help there last year for food addiction.) He’d been there since Feb. 21, three days after Judd said in court papers that they had separated.

After a tough divorce in 1998 from businessman Arch Kelley III—with whom she had two children, Elijah, 12, and Grace, 10—it seemed Judd had met her match in Roach, who was Judd’s security director and road manager for eight years before they shared their first kiss. “They had a real connection,” says a concert promoter who’s known Roach for 20 years. “They had the same dry sense of humor—they just really hit it off.” He describes Roach as a protector, not a predator, which makes the news of the arrest a shock to all. “I’ve never seen him even act inappropriately,” says the promoter. “Anyone who met him was completely charmed.”
