Short sequined skirts and tight-fitting tops are more her style on the ice, but for a night out on April 7 Ekaterina Gordeeva chose a pantsuit that was—how to put it?—roomy. On her way to a club in Portland, Maine, with some fellow skaters, she found herself discussing the dearth of decent maternity clothes. “Oh, well,” she finally said with a shrug. “It’s only nine months.”

Seven down, two to go for Gordeeva, 29, who is expecting a baby girl in June. It was only six years ago that the two-time Olympic pairs skating champion looked on helplessly as her husband and partner, Sergei Grinkov, 28, suffered a heart attack while practicing and died, leaving her to raise their daughter Daria, then 3, by herself. Gordeeva told of her broken heart in the 1996 bestseller My Sergei, and though it might have seemed impossible then, it’s clear there is a new prince in her life—1998 Russian Olympic gold medalist Ilia Kulik, 23. “She has found love again,” says her longtime friend and manager Deb Nast. “And she’s happy to be a family again. Ilia and Daria get along great.”

Gordeeva and Kulik went public with their relationship in 1999 after touring with Stars on Ice. Today they share homes in Connecticut and Los Angeles, but so far have not announced plans to wed. In fact, Gordeeva has even held off on a baby shower, preferring not to stockpile infant clothes. “She’s very superstitious,” explains Nast. “If you’re a pregnant woman in Russia you definitely don’t buy anything before you deliver.” With just weeks to go, though, Gordeeva will likely allow herself a little browsing. “And after the baby is born,” adds Nast, “she’ll get lots of presents.”
