Six years since the plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard that killed John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, “not a day passes that I don’t miss him,” says his cousin, congressman Patrick J. Kennedy. “He lived life to the fullest.” That much is clear in the photos on the following pages, taken from the new book John F. Kennedy Jr.: A Life in Pictures and published here to mark what would have been Kennedy’s 45th birthday. The images—from his first years in the White House to shirtless summers in Hyannis Port, Mass., and life as a magazine editor in Manhattan—reflect what friend Robert Littell calls one of JFK Jr.’s best features: “He had a no-fear, damn-the-cynics sense that we’re all lucky to be alive.”
