MAN of the HOURJamie Foxx almost topped his Globe-winning turn in Ray with his exuberant acceptance speech, capped by a tearful tribute to his grandmother Estelle Talley, who had adopted and raised him, and who died last fall. “I used to think that was corny,” Foxx later said of shedding tears onstage. “It is—until it happens to you. My grandmother did everything for me.” The actor was in higher spirits as he prepared to make the most of his win: “The after-party will not be televised!” KATHY GRIFFIN’S KEY QUESTIONS Covering the red carpet for E!, the comedian surprised celebs with some shocking queries. She didn’t get many answers, but she made up for it in laughs. “If you don’t win tonight…who are you going to fire tomorrow?” “How many gay stylists did it take to put you together tonight?” “Scientology or Kabbalah?” “Do you really think it’s fair that Jamie Foxx got three nominations and the Olsen twins didn’t get one between them?” “Atkins or South Beach?” “Do you guys have any weed?” “Your movie is excellent, but do you really think it’s better than The Surreal Life 4?” “You guys entered rehab at what age?” HAPPY HOUSEWIVESWinning for best TV comedy, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry gave the night’s most intriguing acceptance speech. Before his mom gave him the idea for the show, he said, he was unemployed—and his agent had been arrested. Indeed, his former agent, Marcie Wright, was convicted in 2003 of embezzling an estimated $250,000 from her clients ($79,000 of which belonged to Cherry). The writer, who accepted his trophy alongside stars Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross and Nicollette Sheridan, brought his mom, Martha, as his date. She inspired the show after admitting to Cherry in 2001 that she had her own moments of desperation as a mom. On the red carpet Cherry told her, “It’s been forever since you’ve gotten dressed up for something.” Replied the original desperate housewife, “Yes, it has.” THE PARTIESStars didn’t have far to walk, since the awards ceremony and the parties were staged at the Beverly Hilton hotel. While some 6,000 guests and staff crowded into the parties, some revelers simply opted to celebrate in the hotel’s lobby. 1. Guests lapped up the poolside locale of the network’s Moroccan-themed bash, held at Griff’s restaurant. HBOShe wasn’t up for a Globe, but Ellen DeGeneres glowed like a winner as she strode into the HBO bash holding hands with her new girlfriend, Arrested Development’s Portia de Rossi. “I’m really, really happy,” said DeGeneres. So was Drea de Matteo, who caught up with Sopranos costar Jamie-Lynn DiScala while also reuniting, and lip-locking, with on-again, off-again boyfriend Shooter Jennings. Meanwhile Halle Berry only had eyes for the buffet’s goat cheese and sun-dried tomato ravioli: “Now I’m gonna take my shoes off and eat some food!” FOXThe Stardust Room at the Beverly Hilton began to buzz before the soiree even kicked off, when new couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi showed up at the viewing party. Once the awards show ended there was plenty to toast with a best comedy win for Sideways and a best TV drama award for Nip/Tuck. Sideways stars Paul Giamatti, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh celebrated alongside actor Ewan McGregor, who got comfy lying on one of the party’s all-white sofas. MIRAMAXEven gruff Miramax studio head Harvey Weinstein felt upbeat during the celebration at Trader Vic’s. “It’s a great triumph for [director] Martin Scorsese and his vision,” Weinstein said of Aviator’s best drama win and best actor triumph for Leonardo DiCaprio. Weinstein, 52, had even more reason to smile with his new girlfriend, Marchesa fashion designer Georgina Chapman, 28, on his arm. The fete, cohosted by Glamour magazine, Coors Light and AMC, also drew A-listers Quentin Tarantino, Orlando Bloom and nominee Scarlett Johansson, who stepped out in a tight, coral Roland Mouret gown. “The inspiration was Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not,” said Johansson. But the feel? “Quite uncomfortable!” IN STYLE WARNER BROS.The courtyard bash at the Beverly Hilton quickly turned into a block party for the residents of Wisteria Lane. “I love to dance,” said Desperate Housewives‘ Felicity Huffman, who did just that at the fete with husband William H. Macy and fellow castmates while a 12-piece R&B band played hits such as Ray Charles’s “Georgia on My Mind.” Also spotted: Lost costars Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly, who met up at the party after cuddling at the Globes ceremony. UNIVERSAL NBCThere was no mistaking it, the party belonged to Jamie Foxx, the winning star of Universal’s Ray. “I couldn’t stop screaming [when Jamie won],” said costar Regina King. “We were just so proud.” On hand to help celebrate: Debra Messing, Will Ferrell, Zach Braff and Christine Lahti, who raved, “I loved Jamie’s acceptance speech!” What did Foxx think of the kudos? “A crowd of my peers rooting for Ray Charles and this movie—it’s a beautiful thing.” Jason Lynch, Greg Adkins, Eleni Gage.
