EVA MENDES MY STYLE RULES
THE ACTRESS AND NEW YORK & COMPANY DESIGNER, 41, SHARES THE SECRETS TO HER POLISHED LOOK
When the star is designing for New York & Company, “it’s just clothes exploding everywhere!” she tells PEOPLE. “We bring in vintage stuff and a lot from my own closet.” She also listens to her customers: “I read the comments on the [brand’s] Facebook page.” In one case, too-billowy sleeves got the boot. “I was like, ‘I hear you, I’m not doing that again!'”
ADD A BELT TO DEFINE YOUR WAIST.
Play up your shape
“My mom was a young lady in the ’50s, and a very cinched waist was the fashion then,” says Mendes, who also favors an hourglass silhouette. Her secret: a “great belt,” not shape wear (“I find it torturous!”).
Look for inspiration in unlikely places
“If I see a Goodwill or a Salvation Army, it’s so much fun for me to stop in,” she says. “I’m like an archaeologist—I can feel when there’s gold in the hills…. [and] my hairstylist and I just bought a bunch of very cheap scarves at the airport.”
Keep your leisure wear ladylike
She’s joked about steering clear of sweatpants at home and prefers loose dresses to denim. “I find them so much more comfortable than jeans. Obviously I’ve worn jeans in the past, but it was because all my dresses were dirty!”
Have a go-to look
“I know what fits and I know what I like, even down to my makeup,” says Mendes, who takes just 10 minutes to get ready, even after giving birth in September to Esmeralda, her daughter with boyfriend Ryan Gosling. “I don’t always look put-together, and that’s okay. I don’t put pressure on myself.”
Find a signature accessory
“38 years later and still holding strong on the head-wrap comeback,” she wrote on Instagram of this childhood pic. It’s her fallback: “When in doubt, I put my hair in a head scarf and I’m out the door!”
