Style Watch

All That Jazz

Get ready for Great Gatsby glamor—designers from Dior to Diane von Furstenberg sent their versions of flapper style down the runways for spring.

OLD IS NEW AGAIN: Expect to see lots of art deco geometric patterns, drop-waist dresses and beaded fringe.

HOW TO WEAR IT: Pile on pearls like Maria Bello, wear a bob like Natalie Portman, but blend the look with modern shoes or a handbag so you don’t look like you’re headed for a costume party.

Behind the Seams

MOST IMPROVED

The 5’1″ actress is usually short on red-carpet raves, but Brittany Murphy, newly engaged and recently resplendent at the Golden Globes, is scoring high-fashion points in her shimmery Dolce & Gabbana gown.

SWEATER GET: A happy, larger-with-life Gwyneth Paltrow parked her Range Rover in front of Liz Lange Maternity in New York City and shopped while dashing out to feed the meter. She requested no special treatment and was in great spirits….

Gwynnie bought Liz Lange’s I cashmere-blend sweater, m $150; 888-616-5777.

LEG UP: Levi’s made instant minis for celebs at Sundance by hacking a pair of men’s 501s and adding embroidery. Zooey Deschanel picked up a few, including one labeled “Zooey.” Demi Moore emblazoned hers with “Dashmi”—her own play on the “Bennifer” moniker. Given that breakup, let’s hope they don’t reap what they sew….

To make your own: Take a pair of men’s Levi’s 501s two to three sizes bigger than your normal size and cut off the legs. Adorn as you see fit.

IN HAUTE PURSUIT: Christina Aguilera took the Paris couture shows by storm, attending pal Donatella Versace’s show and Givenchy’s with Liv Tyler, plus Galliano, Dior, Ungaro and others. “She was checking out clothes for the Grammys,” says her rep. Adds Aguilera: “It was about making relationships and meeting the designers.” As for the black hair? “I have many different looks,” she says. And likely now has a wardrobe for each….

SECRET ADMIRER: Victoria’s Secret gave Oscar’s potential Best Actresses a bit of extra support. Nominees like Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron received Angels bra and undies, a $7,000 diamond Mouawad pendant, a lip gloss with a $5,000 diamond applicator and Dream Angels perfume. That’s quite a lift.

Victoria’s Secret’s Oscar gifts are worth more than $12,000.

GOLDEN GLOBES EXTRA

  • Pinned Their Hopes
  • What did these three Globe nominees have in common when they were getting dressed—besides butterflies in their stomachs? Brooches in their hair. This year red-carpet jewelry was bare-necked, but it still came out ahead as actresses like Uma Thurman and Cate Blanchett opted for ornamental diamond clips. It’s like clasping for stars.
  • Love the Dress…WHAT’S UP WITH THE HAIR?
  • Gwen Stefani‘s vintage Valentino doesn’t get its proper do when topped by a matching dome, and the subtleties of Scarlett Johansson‘s Stella McCartney are hard to see past the Medusa-like braids. They were both off by just a hair—style.

BEST USE OF A VINTAGE ACCESSORY: Aisha Tyler

The poor kid got a tough elbow break while snowboarding during her visit to Sundance, but she made a fetching recovery at a Golden Globes party in a vintage scarf and Bradley Bayou for Halston ensemble. “At first I didn’t want to go,” says Tyler, because she wasn’t sure how to dress or how she would maneuver the crowds. A hunt for a sophisticated sling provided the answers. “I felt pretty. And not so bad about the break. People were gentle, escorted me and bought me drinks. It was great!”
