Summer’s here, and the time is right…for dazzling whites on the red carpet as well as on heat-baked city streets. Whether it’s with fluid shapes (Liz Hurley, Amanda Bynes) or clean, geometric lines (Eva Mendes, Tamala Jones), celebs are taking carte blanche—the better, it seems, to flatter dark coloring or show off (fake) bronzed skin. “I feel that much more golden [in white],” says Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon. New bride Jamie-Lynn Sigler discovered the great white way prep-ping for the altar: “After all the fittings for my wedding dress, it became one of my favorite colors.” Sexy or sweet, one thing’s for sure: This season a little white magic can land you a starring role.
Pre-Wimbledon, Venus Williams modeled Rbk by Diane Von Furstenberg. The Reebok tennis line that she helped to design will be in stores in August.
behind the seam
Lucy Liu looked more like a goddess than an angel at the Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle premiere in London. Wearing a classically draped Emanuel Ungaro haute couture gown in rich sapphire, Liu kept things simple with silver shoes and sleek, standout jewelry. (The question is: Can she still kick butt in it?)
PIRATE BOOTY: L.A.-based leather artist Brennan Byers, who conjured up white leather duffel bags and snazzy belts with gold brocade for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, went the extra mile for the film’s star, Johnny Depp, When Depp told him he longed to resurrect a leather bracelet that he fuzzily recalled wearing in one of his films, Byers hit the video store. Eventually he spotted the band on Depp’s wrist in Platoon and, after working all night, presented Depp with a perfect copy. Who says happy endings are just for the movies?…
IN THE BAG: It’s never too early to start currying favor with Emmy hopefuls. Nominations are due this week, and Lancôme Paris will present odds-on faves including Debra Messing, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston with custom-made train cases bearing goodies from its Urban Eve Fall Collection on July 18. (As if these lilies needed gilding!)…
DESIGNING WOMAN: Stylesetter Gwen Stefani has teamed with LeSportsac to create limited-edition bags and accessories rocked out with chrome and leather. The collection ($30-$178) hits stores on Aug. 15, but the diva hosted a preview for friends June 21 at her house in L.A. Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette made it, but touring Angels Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu had to send their regrets. They called to congratulate her though, and Stefani sweetly offered to send their “favors”—$118 Tattoo bags—when they returned to L.A. (Is she a peach or what?)…
Getting in Toon
Maybe it’s because they’ve barely left childhood behind, but teen stars like Hilary Duff are turning animated faves into fashion statements. Of course, Mickey, Felix and Co. are classics—like the little black dress, they’ll be around forever.
Angel in Disguise
Inspired, perhaps, by the surreal makeup worn by fellow crimefighter Cameron Diaz in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Drew Barrymore went undercover at two overseas gigs to promote the film. Or was she just trying to shake up the red-carpet routine?
Even stars like Katie Holmes and Christina Ricci need a stylish place to stash their wet bikinis and other messy beach gear—which is why they’re bagging these jewel-toned, vinyl-lined totes in Pucci-esque prints. Très Brigitte Bardot—or maybe Jackie O.?
